Episode 1 - Nate Molloy

Nate Molloy - 10/11/2024

For Alpine Voices first ever episode, we invited Nate Molloy, a fourth year journalism student at the University of Montana, to speak with us about his experience finding a sense of community in the sport, the challenges that come with climbing in Montana, and more.

Nate is originally from Eagle, Colorado, and moved to Bozeman, Montana, after high school.

Though he was not originally familiar with the climbing scene in Montana, Nate has found mentors and friends in various places in the state that have helped out his climbing journey tremendously.

Luckily for us, Nate was generous enough to teach us about what’s happening in Montanas climbing scene, where to climb, and even some suggestions on where to find climbing partners!

Join us and listen in to our conversation! We promise the audio quality will only improve in the future.

Nate documents his major climbing and backcountry skiing accomplishments on his blog! He discusses the importance of blogging and how it can inspire and inform other climbers. You can find his blog here

Nate mentions the importance of organizations like the Western Montana Climbing Coalition and the Rocky Mountaineers club in supporting the climbing community in Missoula, and around Montana.

Interested in climbing in Lolo? Nate recommends a newly made guidebook by Mackenzie Moore & Harrison Schutt called “A Rock Climbers Guide to Lolo Pass.” You can purchase it here

We always recommend checking out the local climbing gym, Freestone, here in Missoula!
